MARTIN, Tenn. – Debi Adcock, of Union City, and Steve Barnett, of Martin, received Fall 2018 Outstanding Employee Awards from the University of Tennessee at Martin during a breakfast reception Oct. 23.
Adcock has served as the administrative assistant for the Division of Student Affairs since 2009 and began her UT Martin tenure in the Office of Admissions in 2003. “She is always looking out for the best interests of our students and the Student Affairs staff,” wrote her coworkers in her nomination letter. “She is often asked to perform work that would probably be considered outside of her job description, but she never complains and always completes tasks in a thorough and professional manner.”
She also coordinates the Young Scholars Academy held each summer for underrepresented high school juniors and seniors in West Tennessee. The weeklong residential program gives students the opportunity to experience college campus and classroom settings before making post-secondary education choices.
Barnett is coordinator of the Office of Educational Outreach and has been part of the UT Martin staff since 2016. He is responsible for the budget, personnel, strategic planning, service delivery and staffing of the central Office of Educational Outreach, as well as providing support to the directors of the five UT Martin Educational Outreach Centers in Jackson, Parsons, Ripley, Selmer and Somerville.
“The Office of Educational Outreach has seen a positive turnaround and expansion in our operations throughout Steve’s tenure, and the transition to become a better university continues with his work,” wrote his nominator. “He is passionate about the importance of higher education and wants to see the university grow and flourish.”
A few of Barnett’s notable projects include coordinating the relocation of the UT Martin Jackson Center to the Jackson State Community College campus; managing the procurement, delivery and installation of furnishings, fixtures and equipment prior to the opening of the new UT Martin Somerville Center; coordinating exterior signage and façade upgrades for the Ripley and Selmer locations; and organizing the installation of security cameras and monitoring systems at four of the five locations.
UT Martin Outstanding Employee Awards are given to one exempt and one non-exempt employee each semester. Recipients are nominated by their coworkers and chosen by a selection committee.
