The 23rd annual Martin Empty Bowls event will be held from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 17, at the Farmers Market Pavilion in downtown Martin.
This event, sponsored by the UT Martin Department of Visual and Theatre Arts, will feature a thrift store pop-up, ceramics, local shopping, music, giveaways and kids’ art projects.
Visitors can purchase a handcrafted bowl with a minimum $15 donation, with proceeds collected from this event supporting WE CARE Ministries in its mission of supporting food security in the community.
Empty Bowls is a regional project based on the Empty Bowls Project, an international grassroots movement founded to raise money and awareness for hunger-relief charities and food banks.
UT Martin’s chapter of Empty Bowls was founded in 2003 by UT Martin professor emeritus and potter David McBeth.
Thomas Edwards, lecturer of visual and theatre arts, is the coordinator of this year’s Empty Bowls event. He previewed a variety of bowl styles and sizes from which to choose.
“We have some smaller bowls that would be good for maybe some ice cream,” he said. “We have bowls that are more traditionally the soup-salad-cereal size, and then we have a small selection – about 80 handled soup mugs – that are, from what I understand, those are always the most popular and fly off the tables quickly.”
Also available are about 80 larger serving bowls.
