Butterfly release marks suicide awareness month

The UT Martin Care Team hosted a suicide prevention program in the Boling University Center and a butterfly release in front of Paul Meek Library. Both events were held Sept. 17.

The Tennessee Suicide Prevention Network provided Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) suicide prevention training, where participants learned to recognize warning signs of suicide, how to respond to someone experiencing a crisis and how to connect people with appropriate resources and support.

That afternoon, a proclamation was signed by Dr. Andy Lewter, vice chancellor for student affairs, naming September as Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. Participants then took part in a butterfly release outside the Paul Meek Library to honor lives, raise awareness and show commitment to suicide prevention and support.
