CTL hosts student engagement session

The Center for Teaching and Learning hosted its first student engagement session Sept. 15 with the faculty learning community. A faculty learning community is a small group of professors from different departments who meet to work on one teaching challenge together. It works much like a study group: everyone brings their own experience, and everyone leaves with new ideas to try. Over three sessions this semester, faculty will share practical ways to keep students engaged and involved in their learning. This is the first session of three for this fall semester; there are 14 faculty members who are part of this inaugural faculty learning community. This session titled “The Engagement Toolbox: Ideas, Strategies, and Action” was led by Dr. Cayce Batts, lecturer of social work. Batts talked about how to keep students engaged in a course in various ways and the importance of doing so. The next student engagement session will be conducted by Dr. Bob Lowe, assistant professor of computer science, from 1 to 2:45 p.m., Friday, Oct. 9, and is also available online via Zoom. A link for access to the Zoom meeting will be sent out before the meeting.
