UT Martin hosts two Tennessee Governor’s Schools

The University of Tennessee at Martin is hosting two Tennessee Governor’s Schools through Friday, June 26, providing rising high school juniors and seniors with a unique educational opportunity.

UT Martin hosts the Tennessee Governor’s School for the Humanities and the Tennessee Governor’s School for the Agricultural Sciences. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Tennessee Governor’s Schools program and the 40th year for the Governor’s School for the Humanities.

Students attending both Governor’s Schools have classes, live on campus in residence facilities and have their meals in the Skyhawk Dining Hall, getting a feel for college life. Each Governor’s School also has travel opportunities and activities on campus.

The Tennessee Governor’s School for the Humanities (TGSH) is directed by Dr. Jerald Ogg, professor of mass media and strategic communication. He has directed the program since 2001, now in his 26th year in that position.

TGSH classes enable participants to gain three college credit-hours at UT Martin and are taken in the morning, with seminars provided after lunch. Students have free time or a scheduled program after dinner.

The TGSH has 48 students out of 231 applicants from across the state participating in the four-week program.

The Tennessee Governor’s School for the Agricultural Sciences (TGSAS) began in 2004 and marks its 23rd year. The program is directed by Dr. Philip Smartt, professor of natural resources management. He is in his second year in that position.

The TGSAS has 32 students participating in the four-week program out of 214 applicants.

The Governor’s School for the Humanities was the first Tennessee Governor’s School, established at UT Martin in 1985 and funded by the Tennessee Legislature as a pilot program.

Due to the success of that program, in 1986, the Legislature funded four separate programs: the Tennessee Governor’s School for the Humanities at UT Martin, the Tennessee Governor’s School for the Arts at Middle Tennessee State University, the Tennessee Governor’s School for International Studies at the University of Memphis (then known as Memphis State University) and the Tennessee Governor’s School for the Sciences at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

Today, there are 11 Tennessee Governor’s Schools across the state, each lasting three to four weeks during the summer. Each Tennessee Governor’s School provides instruction in a particular academic area, like the humanities or agricultural sciences.
