The Master of Science in Education (MSED) degree for school counseling at the University of Tennessee at Martin is the top-ranked program in the 2027 state rankings released by CounselingPsychology.org.
The program is recognized for being fully online and accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) and the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP).
CounselingPsychology.org considered several factors in its program rankings for Tennessee.
The website explains that “net price and financial aid availability carry the heaviest weight” in the rankings. All programs featured by CounselingPsychology.org offer online or hybrid coursework, and any references to the program outcomes, such as graduation rates and post-graduation earnings, reference school-wide and not program outcomes.
Specifically referencing UT Martin’s program, the website notes that the degree “focuses on preparing ethical school counselors for K-12 settings” and added, “Students move though counseling theory, crisis intervention, group dynamics and classroom management while completing supervised practicum and internships.”
Other features include 60 total credit hours to complete the program; full-degree and 30-credit, licensure-only tracks; preparation for the Praxis Professional School Counselor exam; and a faculty adviser assigned to each student.
“As the top provider of K-12 teachers in Tennessee, this is well-deserved recognition for the work our faculty do to assure that UT Martin is sending the best-qualified graduates into school and mental health counseling positions,” said Dr. Clinton Smith, the university’s educational studies department chair. “UT Martin’s program is flexible, affordable and offers a high-quality learning experience in an online environment.”
