Dr. RICHARD ROBINSON

Dr. Richard Robinson, professor of mass media and strategic communication, presented a paper at the annual fall conference of the Tennessee Communication Association, held Sept. 25-26 at Volunteer State Community College in Gallatin.

The presentation, titled “The Role of Radio Station KAAY During the Cuban Missile Crisis: Broadcasting United States Political Propaganda from Arkansas to Cuba,” is a historical study about the first and only documented utilization of a Little Rock, Arkansas, radio station to voluntarily broadcast government propaganda to a foreign country during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962.

Dr. JEFFREY LONGACRE

Dr. Jeffrey Longacre, professor of English, presented his paper “America and Its Discontents: Kubrick’s American Trilogy” on Oct. 1 at the annual Literature/Film Association Conference in Elon, North Carolina.

In this paper, Longacre examines Stanley Kubrick’s final three films — “The Shining,” “Full Metal Jacket” and “Eyes Wide Shut” — and some of their common intertexts together as an informal trilogy on American themes in the last quarter of the 20th century.

Those common intertexts include “The Masque of the Red Death” by E.A. Poe, Mickey Mouse and “The Wizard of Oz.”  Longacre focused on the themes of authority and authorship across these three films and how they all feature protagonists who struggle for some kind of control over larger historical grand narratives.

The conference was held Oct. 1-3 at Elon University.
