The University of Tennessee at Martin will add a concentration in mechatronics engineering to the Bachelor of Science degree in engineering starting with the fall 2019 semester. This new option is the sixth available concentration under the engineering degree program and will allow students to combine principles from mechanical, electrical and manufacturing engineering to work in fields where machines and processes are highly automated.
“Mechatronics is a multi-disciplined field that is concerned with systems consisting of both mechanical and electrical components controlled using computer-based technology,” said Dr. Bob LeMaster, professor and chair of the UT Martin Department of Engineering. Only a small number of institutions in the region offer such a program.
This is the second new engineering concentration to be introduced in three academic years. The first was the addition of a manufacturing engineering option, which debuted in the fall 2017 semester. These two concentrations join existing options in civil, mechanical, electrical and industrial engineering.
The UT Martin Department of Engineering is expected to grow exponentially with the completion of the Latimer Engineering and Science Building, projected to open in 2021, and a proposed Innovation and Product Realization Facility. The Bachelor of Science in engineering program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET. For more information on ABET accreditation, visit abet.org.
