Twelve UT Martin students participated in a geology, soils and agriculture travel study through Washington state in August in fulfillment of GEOL 475 offered in spring 2024.
The group, led by Dr. Angie Van Boening, Dr. Anthony Delmond and Dr. Bethany Wolters, flew into Spokane and spent three days in eastern Washington exploring the Palouse region, visiting local farmers markets and learning about the Columbia River flood basalts.
From there, the group traveled to the central Washington region, where they toured the Hanford nuclear site, learned about viticulture in the area and learned about the channeled scablands.
For the third leg of the trip, they crossed into western Washington, where they learned about the Cascade volcanoes, including a stop at Mount St. Helens. They traveled along the Pacific Coast north into Olympic National Park and ended the trip with a visit to the Pikes Place Market in Seattle.
