Michael Armour has been interested in civil engineering since he was a child. Growing up, he was fascinated with the waterways in his town and how they worked.
“I would throw rocks into the streams to see how it altered the water,” said Armour.
A native of Covington, Tennessee, Armour is a senior civil engineering major at the University of Tennessee at Martin.
When he graduated from Brighton High School in May 2020, he spent a year at community college before transferring to UT Martin.
“I heard about UTM from a friend, and when I came up to visit, I talked to the department chair,” he said. “He explained the engineering program, and I knew it was something I wanted to do.”
Armour also liked the 16-to-1 student-to-faculty ratio and the smaller class sizes at UT Martin.
“I knew I could make one-on-one connections with my teachers,” he said. “I feel like I’ve gotten that, and I learn better from these connections.”
In high school, Armour enjoyed activities like hunting and fishing and was a member of the Student Council. His senior year, Armour served as the president of his class and learned professional skills that he has utilized in college.
Armour has been a member of the Student Alumni Council (SAC) for three years at UT Martin and currently serves as its president.
“SAC has given me access to information and opportunities to connect with alumni,” he said.
Armour has connected with many people through Homecoming, I Heart UTM Week and other campus activities that are popular with students and alumni.
Armour is also a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers chapter at UT Martin. This program is designed to prepare engineering students to be successful in their fields and teach them leadership skills that can be applied in their professional lives.
After graduating, Armour plans to pursue a master’s degree in civil engineering at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and to become a civil engineer.
