Judy Heumann, a lifelong advocate for the rights of disabled people, will be the featured speaker for the University of Tennessee at Martin’s Bettie Graham Special Education Seminar at 6 p.m., Tuesday, April 5, via Zoom. Those wanting to attend should register in advance at bit.ly/36kcL4B.
This seminar is presented by the UT Martin College of Education, Health and Behavioral Sciences and made possible through an endowment given by Newell and Bettie Graham of Union City. The Bettie Graham Seminar Series on Diagnosis and Early Intervention of Learning Difficulties features topics and speakers that explore the importance of early childhood education.
Heumann was instrumental in developing and implementing key legislation for persons with disabilities, including Section 504, the Individuals with Education Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Rehabilitation Act, and the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Her memoir, “Being Heumann: An Unrepentant Memoir of a Disability Rights Activist,” co-authored by Kristen Joiner, was published in 2020. Before starting Judith Heumann LLC, she served in the Bill Clinton and Barack Obama administrations.
