20-year veteran from Union City to speak at Veterans Day program

Tasha Bowman, of Union City, a retired sergeant first class who served more than 20 years in the Tennessee Army National Guard, will be the Veterans Day speaker Wednesday, Nov. 11, at the University of Tennessee at Martin.

Veterans Day is a national observance that honors living and deceased military veterans who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces.

The program will begin at 8 a.m. in the Boling University Center’s Watkins Auditorium. Parking will be available in the university center and Paul Meek Library parking lots and in the lot located across Mount Pelia Road next to Pacer Pond.

Most recently, Bowman competed as a finalist in the Ms. Veteran America pageant, which serves as a platform for advocacy and public awareness. Bowman supports the work of Final Salute Inc., a non-profit organization that seeks to end homelessness among women veterans. She has raised more than $10,000 for Final Salute Inc. to provide safe and suitable housing and other critical support to homeless women veterans and their children.

During her military career, Bowman served in four different military occupational specialties, including motor transport operator, human resources specialist, military police and combat medic. She deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Inherent Resolve and was awarded the Combat Action Badge.

Bowman earned her Master of Science degree in Family and Consumer Sciences in 2009 from UT Martin.

Following her military retirement in June 2025, Bowman continued serving her community and currently works as a police dispatcher. The event is free and open to the public.
