Cassie Luna, coordinator of the Skyhawks Achieving in Life (SAIL) program at UT Martin, spoke at the Kiwanis Club of Martin meeting Sept. 2 about this new program. She was introduced by Kiwanian Dr. Clinton Smith (right), professor of special education and chair of the Department of Educational Studies, who is the principal investigator for the SAIL grant which gives students with intellectual and developmental disabilities the opportunity for access to higher education and the college experience.
Luna explained that the program began on Aug. 1 and described some of the classes and activities offered for students. The SAIL program focuses not just on education but also on empowerment, ensuring that each student gains confidence, skills and a strong foundation for lifelong success. Upon completion of the program, each student will receive a certificate.
Luna was given a certificate of appreciation showing that a donation will be made in her honor to Captain’s Pantry.
