The Addenda faculty/staff newsletter for UT Martin returned to its weekly publication on Aug. 24, and changed its format to a more accessible view over the summer. Each “issue” will be placed in the Addenda tab at the UT Martin news site, and each feature will have its own link at news.utm.edu/category/addenda.
Here are the features that faculty and staff can provide information for:
• YoUTMs: This is a brief two- or three-paragraph story about something that faculty or staff members did, like publish a paper, speak at a function, attend a conference or take part in an event.
This information should be sent to Addenda in an email that includes information such as who (UT Martin faculty or staff member(s) along with position title, including field of instruction, if applicable, and if they have a doctorate), what (topic and premise of the paper or the name of the conference or event), where (online site where the paper can be found or where the conference or event was held) and when (the paper’s publication date, conference date or event date).
There is no need to write the full article. Just send the information, and Addenda will write the story.
• Upcoming events: The Campus Calendar helps to let others know about upcoming campus events. To let people know of an event open to university students, faculty or staff only or open to the public, send an email to Addenda with the date(s) and time(s) of the event, the name and location of the event, and if there is any admission charge. A brief description of the event would also help, and it is best to provide the information at least two weeks before the event.
• You Tell Me: Got a question about UT Martin? Send an email and let Addenda know! Addenda staff members contact people who may have the answer, then publish the question and answer in the “You Tell Me” feature. The name of the person who sends the question is not published.
• Photos at events: If a photo was taken at an event attended by faculty or staff, list the other people in the photo and send it in an email with information describing the event, its location and date(s). These are often similar to YoUTMs.
Here are ways to make Addenda the most informative newsletter possible:
• Email the information to addenda@utm.edu. That will go to those who work to make Addenda possible in the Office of University Relations, including Bud Grimes, vice chancellor for communications and marketing; Nathan Morgan, assistant director of news and visuals; and David Snow, staff writer.
• Addenda uses professional headshots taken through the Office of University Relations with announcements sent in by faculty or staff. Those who don’t have an existing headshot taken by the Office of University Relations or want to update their headshot should contact Nathan Morgan (nmorga15@utm.edu) or Arianne Boma (aboma@utm.edu) to set an appointment to have a headshot taken in the Office of University Relations studio at the Hall-Moody Administration Building.
Here are some guidelines about submissions:
• Submitted photos and graphics are welcome, but the Office of University Relations has the discretion to decline use of submitted images because of poor quality or content.
• A wide range of personal accomplishments is accepted for the YouTM accomplishments and accolades section, including public service activities, academic publication, conference attendance and participation in other aspects of higher education.
• Persons submitting multiple personal accomplishments are limited to one summary submission per month to maximize space and encourage wider participation.
• All submitted material is subject to approval and editing for content and space. The newsletter generally follows Associated Press Style for writing and editing. Exceptions are made for academic submissions.
These and other guidelines can be found at the University of Tennessee SharePoint website.
