UT Martin receives Special Education designation

The University of Tennessee at Martin has officially been designated as a Special Olympics Collegiate Unified Champion School, as announced by Special Olympics Upper West Tennessee.

This prestigious national recognition distinguishes UT Martin as a leader in fostering an environment where students with and without intellectual disabilities compete, lead and learn alongside one another.

Special Olympics Unified Champion Schools is a strategy for schools of all levels that promotes meaningful social inclusion by bringing students together to create accepting school environments.

A Special Olympics Unified Champion School is built on three pillars: Unified Sports, inclusive youth leadership and whole school engagement. By achieving this status at the collegiate level, UT Martin joins a select group of universities nationwide dedicated to breaking down social barriers.

Central to this achievement is the synergy between Special Olympics and the UT Martin Skyhawks Achieving In Life (SAIL) program. As a premier inclusive postsecondary education initiative, SAIL provides students with intellectual and developmental disabilities the opportunity to experience college life, academics and career preparation.

The SAIL program at UT Martin is an inclusive postsecondary education program designed to provide students with intellectual and developmental disabilities a transformative college experience centered on independent living, social skills and employment readiness.

The Unified Champion School designation formalizes the bond between SAIL students and the broader campus community, ensuring that inclusion is not just a program goal but a campus-wide standard.

Through this partnership, SAIL participants and traditional UT Martin students will engage in Unified Sports, where teams are composed of athletes of all abilities, and collaborate on leadership initiatives that promote advocacy and respect. This integration ensures that every Skyhawk, regardless of ability, has a seat at the table and a place on the field.

“As we look toward the future of Upper West Tennessee, the leadership shown by UT Martin serves as a blueprint for excellence,” said Dr. Clinton Smith, chair of the Department of Educational Studies and professor of education. “By weaving the SAIL program into the fabric of Unified Champion Schools, the university is proving that inclusion is the ultimate win for the entire community.”
