World College Radio Day is an annual, international event that celebrates college and high school radio stations across the globe. The University of Tennessee at Martin was among those celebrating Oct. 3 as WUTM 90.3 “The Hawk” held a live broadcast outside the Boling University Center to recognize the contributions of college radio to the UTM campus and beyond.
Those who attended participated in the live broadcast, won prizes and saw the WUTM staff in their commemorative T-shirts designed by Carson Alexander, media design major and WUTM digital media director. These shirts were designed not only to celebrate World College Radio Day, but also to recognize the 125th anniversary of UT Martin’s founding.
“World College Radio Day represents what this university means to me—creativity, expression, and growth,” Alexander said. “It (WUTM) gives me the space to share my voice and continue growing through what I love.”
WUTM is a Class A, FCC-licensed radio station that is managed by UTM students. The station was established on Nov. 17, 1971, and is about to celebrate its 54th year of broadcasting to the UT Martin community and the surrounding area.
Last March, WUTM was honored at the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System International Media Conference in New York, including the recognition of Carson Alexander as Best Social Media Director. WUTM also qualified for the 16th consecutive year for a Platinum Award and won first place in Best Sports Play-by-Play in Women’s Basketball.
Additionally, the Southeast Journalism Conference, held Jan. 31-Feb. 2 at Mississippi State University, recognized WUTM News Director LeeAnne Morefield with third place in the TV Anchoring category.
WUTM provides the campus and surrounding communities with news about the region, public affairs programming, sports broadcasts and political coverage during elections, along with a variety of music and weekly radio shows, including The Bench and Let’s Talk Greek. WUTM offers programming for a wide array of interests as the stations seeks to ensure that the communication and educational needs of the university community and surrounding area are met.
Students and community members can listen to WUTM Radio by tuning into 90.3 FM on their radios, going online to www.wutmradio.com and clicking on “Listen Live,” or through the free TuneIn radio app. For more information about the station, contact the WUTM office by emailing wutm@utm.edu or call 731-881-7095.
