Civil Rights Conference gets underway Feb. 3

The 25th annual University of Tennessee at Martin Civil Rights Conference kicks off Monday, Feb. 3, with a number of educational events during the first week of the conference.

The theme of this year’s Civil Rights Conference is “Strength, Courage and Wisdom: Lessons for the Journey Toward Justice.”

The conference opens with a panel discussion at 6 p.m., Feb. 3, entitled “CRC: From Then to Now,” which focuses on the purpose of the event, and gathers some of the original and subsequent organizers to discuss the purpose and mission of the event. The discussion will be held in Watkins Auditorium in the Boling University Center.

Guest speaker Charlayne Hunter-Gault will speak at 6 p.m., Feb. 4, in Watkins Auditorium. She is an award-winning journalist and a national foreign correspondent. She was also the first African-American student to attend the University of Georgia in 1961.

A financial literacy workshop will be held at 4 p.m., Feb. 5, in Room 206 in the Boling University Center. This session to help students make wise financial decisions now and after graduation.

“A Million Miles Away,” a movie about the life of José Hernández is showing at 2 p.m., Feb. 9, in Watkins Auditorium. José Hernández is a former astronaut, who began his journey as a farmer. This film will help introduce him before his speaking program Feb. 11.
