DeAundra Boyd, a recent graduate from the University of Tennessee at Martin, was named the recipient of the 2021 Michelle Horton Community Service Award. He received a bachelor’s degree in social work during commencement exercises on May 8 and has begun working with the Tennessee Department of Children’s Services’ Foster Care Unit in the Northwest Tennessee region.
The Michelle Horton Service Award honors students in the Department of Behavioral Sciences who make significant contributions to their community through acts of service. To be eligible, students must serve a minimum of 20 service hours. Boyd, of Somerville, volunteered with five local non-profit organizations during his time at UT Martin. He also served as the philanthropy chair for his fraternity and as the president of the UT Martin Student Social Work Association.

“A role model is characterized by an individual that others look up to for encouragement during times of challenge and hope in the midst of despair. DeAundra has exemplified what it is to be a role model in action through his commitment and dedication to service activities at UT Martin and local agencies/organizations,” Alicia Donaldson, program director and professor for the social work program, wrote in Boyd’s nomination material. “DeAundra’s compassion and desire to make a positive impact on the lives of others is an example for all.”
