Stuart McWhorter, commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Finance and Administration, will be the commencement speaker during the University of Tennessee at Martin’s fall 2019 graduation ceremony, scheduled to begin at 11 a.m., Dec. 14, in the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center. The ceremony will be broadcast live on the university’s Facebook page for those unable to attend in person.
McWhorter was named commissioner on Jan. 19, 2019, after serving as statewide finance chair during Gov. Bill Lee’s campaign. Prior to becoming commissioner, McWhorter served as co-founder and chairman of Clayton Associates and has more than 25 years of experience in entrepreneurship and early-stage investing. He has also served as CEO of the Nashville Entrepreneur Center, which helps Nashville-based entrepreneurs create, launch and grow scalable businesses. He has previously served on the board of directors of FirstBank Financial Corporation and as chairman of the compensation committee as well as a member of the audit committee.
He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in management from Clemson University in South Carolina and a master’s degree in health administration from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
UT Martin’s fall commencement ceremony is expected to grant approximately 520 undergraduate degrees and approximately 60 graduate degrees to those who completed the academic requirements to graduate during either the summer or fall 2019 semesters.
