UT Martin library director to speak on the life of D.F. Barry

Dr. John Burch, director of the University of Tennessee at Martin Paul Meek Library, will give a presentation titled “D.F. Barry, the Battle of the Little Bighorn and the Construction of Memory” at 7 p.m., March 12, in the Corbitt Special Collections Reading Room located inside the Paul Meek Library.

The presentation will follow the photography exhibit “Little Shadow Catchers: The Life and Works of David F. Barry” displayed Feb. 4-April 11 in the library’s J. Houston Gordon Museum. Barry, a renowned photographer of the American West, is known for his photos of Native American reservations and military outposts. His works include images of soldiers and Lakota people involved in the Sioux War of 1876 and the Battle of the Little Bighorn.

Burch holds a doctoral degree in history from the University of Kentucky. He has authored or co-authored nine books, including “The Great Society and the War on Poverty: An Economic Legacy in Essays and Documents.” Two of his works, “The Encyclopedia of Water Politics and Policy in the United States” and “Water Rights and the Environment in the United States: A Documentary and Reference Guide,” were named Outstanding Academic Titles by Choice Reviews.
